Retrograde ejaculation: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment in Delhi

Retrograde ejaculation - Overview

Even though the sexual climax is attained, very little semen or no semen is released. One of the major reasons for such issues can be retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation is defined as the condition where the sperms do not flow out of the penis instead move backward towards the bladder to mix with urine during ejaculation.

This condition is also referred to as dry orgasm and can cause infertility in men. The absence of ejaculate and cloudy urine after ejaculation can indicate retrograde ejaculation.

What causes Retrograde Ejaculation?

The bladder opening is guarded by a muscle called the sphincter muscle that tightens, preventing the movement of sperms into the bladder. The sphincter muscle also helps hold the urine in the bladder until urination. In retrograde ejaculation, the sphincter muscle can loosen up causing the backward flow of semen. Several conditions can cause sphincter muscle dysfunction. They are:

  • Prior surgery, such as bladder neck surgery, surgery for testicular cancer, or prostate cancer.
  • Surgical removal of the prostate (prostatectomy) or bladder (cystectomy)
  • Side effects of certain medications used to treat high blood pressure, depression, and prostate inflammation.
  • Nerve damage caused due to diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or accidental injuries.
  • Radiotherapy, performed while treating cancer of the pelvic organs.
