The immune system creates a series of immune responses while destroying microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, fungi. Sometimes, unusual immune responses are generated against the body’s own healthy cells/tissues. These responses can damage the healthy tissues and can lead to disorders known as autoimmune disorders.

Some of the common autoimmune disorders that can affect fertility are lupus, thyroid problems, celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Altered immune responses in these disorders can cause inflammation of the uterus and other reproductive organs, increase the risk of preterm pregnancy loss or infertility. Researchers believe that conditions such as premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis are also due to an autoimmune disorder.

Lupus

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an immunocompromised condition that causes swelling/inflammation of joints, skin tissues, and other organs. Women with lupus experience irregular menstrual periods with increased psychological stress, depression, and reduced sexual desire.

Thyroid Disorders

This autoimmune condition can be because of overactive hyperthyroidism or underactive hypothyroidism. Women with thyroid issues experience irregular menstrual cycles and problems in conceiving.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where gluten consumption can damage the small intestine. This condition can also increase the risk of recurrent pregnancy loss and infertility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints causing inflammation, deformity of joints, and bone erosion. Rheumatoid arthritis is due to the effects of certain sex hormones affecting fertility.

Unexplained Infertility

Sometimes, infertility is caused due to an unknown reason and is considered unexplained infertility. Studies show the presence of autoantibodies in some cases of unexplained infertility.

• Anti-sperm antibodies (ASAs) can cause agglutination (sticking) of sperm cells restricting sperm movement, sperm penetration, and impede implantation.
• Anti-ovarian antibodies are detected in women with premature ovarian failure where antibodies are generated against Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) that can disrupt ovarian functioning.
• Antiphospholipid antibodies can be produced against the placental tissue causing blood clots in the placenta and damage the placenta.
